Work, Life, and a Whole Lot of Chaos: Joy, Laughter, and Love

Life Behind Mrs. K Teaches SPED

Hi! I’m Heather, and I’m the face behind Mrs. K Teaches SPED on Teachers Pay Teachers!

My Personal Life

I’m a parent to two amazing kids and proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m also polyamorous and share my life with two wonderful partners. As a result, every day is full, joyful, and a little unpredictable. Our home includes three cats and three dogs, so there’s always extra energy—and plenty of love. I have ADHD, which gives me a firsthand perspective on learning differences. Because of this, I think creatively about solutions for students. These experiences also inspire the practical, accessible, and easy-to-use resources I create for teachers. For example, many of my resources are designed to support inclusive classrooms and meet diverse learning needs.

Education

I hold a B.S. in Early Childhood Special Education and an M.Ed. in Special Education. In addition, I’m currently working toward an M.Ed. in Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics, and Assessment. Over the years, I’ve taught in a variety of settings, including Pre-K, Head Start, Early Head Start, and K–5 collaborative special education classrooms. These experiences have taught me how different students learn. They also show me how to adapt lessons to support each learner. Furthermore, I understand how important it is to build a classroom where every child can succeed. Therefore, I am passionate about helping other educators do the same. I achieve this through clear teaching strategies and ready-to-use resources.

Outside the Classroom

When I’m not teaching or managing family life, you’ll usually find me reading, taking photos, or exploring creative projects. I especially enjoy capturing moments with my kids, partners, and pets. These experiences often inspire my work. This blog is my space to share insights, resources, and personal stories. Here, you’ll find honest reflections, teaching tips, creative ideas, and lessons learned. Finally, everything I write is in the same way I’d share it with a friend. I hope my work can inspire, guide, and support other educators, parents, and creators navigating life, learning, and a whole lot of joyful chaos.
